Privacy Policy
Road Less Traveled ("RLT") helps you find drives worth taking. This policy explains exactly what the app collects, why, who else touches it, how long it's kept, and how to change your mind or delete it. The short version: RLT needs your location to plan and guide routes; it records your drives only if you say yes; it never sells your data, never uses it for ads, and never tracks you across other apps.
1. Location to plan and guide your routes
To show where you are, build routes from your position and guide you during an adventure, the app uses your device's location. To build and score routes, your start, destination and route lines are sent to RLT's own servers, and the route's line or area — never your name or any identifier — is sent to the services listed in section 4 that supply traffic, weather and road conditions.
RLT does not keep these requests as a record of your trips. To make later routes load faster, results are stored by map area (not by person) for up to 30 days. Our servers do not log your coordinates.
The app uses your location in the background only during an adventure you started, so guidance keeps working when your screen is locked.
2. Drive data — only if you choose to share it
The first time you tap Start Adventure, while you're stopped, the app asks whether you'd like to share drive data. Your adventure starts either way, and nothing about the app changes if you say no.
Drive sharing is being built now. The app may already ask you the question, but nothing is recorded or uploaded until the feature launches; this page will be updated when it does. Once it launches, if you choose to share, for each drive you start with Start Adventure RLT records:
- the routes you were offered and the scores RLT gave them, and the route you chose;
- your GPS path, speed and heading during the drive (about one point per second);
- simple events such as arriving, leaving the route, or long stops;
- your rating and any answers you give to the short optional questions after a drive — asked only once you've arrived or stopped, never while you're driving;
- the app version and device model, so we can tell which version of RLT produced a result.
Protecting your home: before anything leaves your phone, the start and end of every drive — a randomly sized stretch of roughly 400 to 700 meters at each end — is removed, so a drive can't be traced back to where you live or where you went.
No account, no name: shared drives are labeled with a random ID created on your phone when you say yes. It isn't connected to your name, email, contacts, Apple ID or advertising identifier.
How it's used: only to make RLT's routes and scores better — for example, learning which roads people actually enjoy, how accurate RLT's predictions were, and where pavement or traffic differs from what RLT expected. It is never sold, never used for advertising, and never combined with other companies' data about you.
3. Your choices
- Change your mind any time: open Privacy & drive data at the bottom of the app's main screen and switch sharing off. New drives stop being recorded immediately.
- Delete your drive data: tap Delete my drive data on the same screen. Every drive shared from your phone is deleted from RLT's servers and backups, and you get a new random ID. Deletion is completed within 30 days. You can also email hello@peregrinatormotus.com with the anonymous ID shown on that screen.
- Location access: you can change it any time in your device's Settings. Without it, the app can't show your position or route from it, but you can still enter a start point by hand.
4. Who else handles data
RLT doesn't share your data with anyone for their own purposes. These service providers handle data only to run RLT, and we require them to protect it at least as well as this policy does:
- Apple — the map you see and destination search (subject to Apple's own privacy policy).
- Cloudflare — secure network connection to RLT's servers and this website, and — once drive sharing launches — storage for backups, which are encrypted before they leave our server so Cloudflare can't read them.
- Contabo (a hosting company based in Germany) — the computers RLT's servers run on.
- HERE Technologies — live traffic along a route (receives the route line only).
- Weather services — the U.S. National Weather Service, Open-Meteo and OpenWeather (receive a map point or area only).
- Public road and land data — state departments of transportation and 511 traffic programs, and U.S. government datasets (Census, Forest Service, National Park Service, U.S. Geological Survey, Recreation.gov) — receive a map area only.
5. How long data is kept
Route-planning results stored by map area are kept for up to 30 days. Shared drive data is kept until you delete it or ask us to. During RLT's beta we keep shared drives to improve the app; we will publish a fixed retention period before RLT's public launch and update this policy when we do.
6. Security
Everything between the app and RLT's servers travels over encrypted connections. RLT's servers can only be reached through an encrypted tunnel, and its data services require the app's access key. Once drive sharing launches, backups of drive data are encrypted before they leave our server. More on the Safety & Security page.
7. Children
RLT is a driving app and isn't directed to children under 13. We don't knowingly collect data from them.
8. Changes to this policy
If we change what we collect or why, we'll update this page and the app will ask you again before using your drive data for anything new.
